That’s exactly what the sample edit is for.

How does a sample edit work?

You send 20–30 pages of your book (preferably from the middle) in a Word document.
Using Track Changes, I line edit the first 5 pages and leave in-text comments on up to 20 pages.
If it’s a fit, I’ll include a quote for a full edit when I return the sample. If it’s not a fit, I’ll refer you to other editors I know and trust who might be a better fit.

FAQs

I charge $150 for a sample edit, as a lot of time and work is put into it, and you receive a ton of value.

(Secret tip: A sample edit is a microcosm of the larger edit. The problems that I find in a sample are likely evident throughout the manuscript.)

Some editors charge for their samples, while others do it for free. It all depends on their process. But you should always feel comfortable to ask an editor for a sample edit. It's helpful, and even necessary, on both sides.
